13" Zildjian K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbal Set – 1442g / 855g
Weights: Top (K) 855g • Bottom (Z) 1442g
Condition: Very good used condition. No cracks, keyholing, or structural issues. Ink stamp is clearly visible on the K top cymbal; the Z bottom ink has faded, which is common for this model.
The Zildjian K/Z Hi-Hat is a legendary hybrid pairing, designed to push the classic New Beat concept further by combining a dark, expressive K top with an exceptionally heavy, bright Z bottom. The result is a hi-hat set with remarkable articulation, projection, and control, especially in louder musical environments.
Sound character:
These 13" hi-hats deliver an exceptionally strong, sharp, and cutting “chick”, driven by the heavy Z bottom cymbal. The smaller diameter and added mass give the hats a higher pitch and outstanding cut, allowing them to punch through dense mixes with ease.
The K top cymbal adds warmth and complexity, supplying dark overtones that balance the brilliance of the Z bottom. This prevents brittleness when played with sticks and results in a full, musical stick sound with excellent clarity. Open tones are energetic yet controlled, making this set equally effective for precise timekeeping and dynamic accents.
As noted by Rick Mattingly, when compared directly to 13" A Zildjian New Beats, the K/Z delivers a significantly stronger pedal “chick”, while maintaining a similar stick character—something few hi-hat combinations achieve. The K top provides richer overtones than an A top, creating a more balanced and musical response overall.
