“The swish is a type of cymbal invented by Zildjian Avedis USA in collaboration with the great Gene Krupa and included in its catalogs towards the end of the 1930s. It is a type of cymbal that belongs to the china category, but should not be confused with the pang (thicker and noisier ), nor with actual chinas which have a different bell and are mostly used as effects/crashes. The swish was born as an evolution of the ride cymbal and was conceived to support comping in jazz orchestras during moments of maximum volume or to accompany the interventions of the sax section. This example expresses all these characteristics and can be used both as a ride and, in part, as a crash in orchestral contexts or where volume is needed”
